Over 100 pupils of Saint John’s primary school Okworotung in Obudu local government area now receive classes under tree shades after a heavy rainstorm blew off the roof of their classrooms. An unlikely gust of wind eyewitness say blew off the roof at about 7 pm on January 12 earlier this year.
A visit to the institution by CrossRiverWatch which is about 20 kilometers away from Obudu main town revealed the building housed primary one to three pupils who now receive classes under tree shades
within the school premises.
The Headteacher, Chief Michael Ogban revealed he had written a letter copying relevant authorities but was yet to deliver it as the addressee who is the executive secretary of the local government education authority has not been on sit.
“I have written a letter copying relevant authorities but I have to submit it to the executive secretary who is not on sit each time I visit his office”.
The Headteacher who handed CrossRiverWatch a copy of the letter could not give a definite answer why the letter was written a forth night after the event as it was dated January 26.
The Clan head of the community, Chief Moses Odikpo who alongside the Parents Teacher Association PTA chairman, youth president, headteacher and a staff are signatories to the appeal letter says he alerted the
Headteacher as soon as the information reached him decrying the bureaucratic processes which will affect the student and teachers performance.
“I got the information and I immediately informed the Headteacher and PTA chairman. I am happy no one was hurt but the stress these kids and their teachers are undergoing is much and it will affect their performance.
“Unfortunately there is nothing we can do as our purse has little or next to nothing in it as we will have done some remedial work but we still have to get approval first which takes time”.
The Councillor representing the ward, Honorable Etiongbe Denis while reacting to the development, faulted those who wrote appealing for help for not consulting him but promised to include it in his diary when the House resumes plenary.
He said “It is sheer ignorance but I wont blame them, I represent the echelon of government in the communities that make up this Ward and I have to be informed so as to take necessary action. I will include this in my diary and when the house resumes plenary, we will discuss it”.
The pupils so far seem to enjoy the ride but for how long; as the raining season is approaching.
