CHINA: Two young children have been discovered apparently living with dogs in cages after their parents divorced and both remarried in other cities.
The unnamed brother and sister, aged six and four, went to live with their grandfather, who breeds dogs for a living.
They have since been spotted in cages eating and drinking with dogs.
Neighbours reportedly tried several times to convince the grandfather to send his grandchildren to a rescue shelter for homeless children.
A neighbourtold local media: “The stench is intolerable, the entire area is covered by rubbish, and excrement from the dogs. Flies and mosquitoes are everywhere and when they get any food they have to fight with it for the dogs.
Family split: The little ones were reportedly left with their grandfather when their parents divorced
“It’s not unusual to see them drinking wastewater that puddles on the ground after rainfall.”
The grandfather allegedly refused to act, opting instead to keep the children in his dog-breeding facility.
Local volunteers have donated food and clothes to the children, but they were unable to forcibly remove them without official intervention from local authorities.
Charity organisations are hoping for more assistance from the local community to improve the siblings’ living standards.
Officials have so far declined to comment but after the story was widely shared several media have officially requested a statement and it seems likely now the boys will be moved to more suitable accommodation after being taken into care.
